College Going Culture Activities
An integral component of the GEAR UP partnership grant entails working with students to promote a “college going culture” through various workshops on topics related to pursuing a postsecondary education, including career awareness, goal setting and financial aid workshops. Students also have the opportunity to visit college campuses where they experience first-hand what life as a college student is like. To date, 227 students have visited a variety of college campuses, including College of the Sequoias, UC Santa Barbara, Fresno Pacific University and UC Merced.
Need for College Going Information
El Monte Junior High School student survey results show need for GEAR UP:
Has anyone in your school talked to you about what classes you need to go to college?
Have you ever heard the phrase “A-G Requirements”?
Academic Enrichment
Another component of the UC Merced GEAR UP partnership grant is made up of academic enrichment activities focused on mathematics and language arts. During summer 2006, a four-week summer academy was held for 65 students. Pre/post tests confirm the benefits of this activity as evidenced by average normalized gains.
