Transfer Scholar Program Overview
Established in 2005, the Transfer Scholars Program seeks to empower high school students who are community-college bound on aspects related to transferring from a community college to a four-year college/university. While several academic partnership programs work to increase transfer rates among first generation, low-income students, their efforts begin when students enroll at a community college. UC Merced’s Transfer Scholars Program works with students while they are in high school by separating community college and four-year college/university bound students soon after the traditional Nov. 30 application deadline for most colleges and universities. The target population of the Transfer Scholars Program is community-college-bound students still enrolled in high school that are served by UC Merced’s UC Scholars EAOP Program.
Serving 114 students, the Transfer Scholars Program provides participants a variety of individual and group activities that allow them to answer questions such as:
- Why must I take a community college placement exam in high school?
- What impact does my score on the community college placement exam have on my plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree?
- When must I register for classes at the community college?
- How does my financial aid package for community college differ from that of a four-year college/university?
- What is the sequence of courses that I must register for at a community college in order to transfer to a four-year college/university?
- What is the relationship between community college and four-year college/university course catalogues?
Each student participant also receives an electronic Individual Academic Plan (IAP) highlighting community college courses that must be completed in order to transfer to a four-year college/university. Other Transfer Scholars Program activities include:
- Visits to community college campuses where students meet transfer directors;
- Transfer Scholars Program staff members serve as liaisons for students interested in signing Transfer Agreement Guarantees (TAGs) with colleges and universities;
- Transfer Scholars Program staff members serve as liaisons for students who need to communicate with community college and four-year college/university representatives regarding enrollment, financial aid and transfer-related matters.
